Week Six: BILL PLYMPTON

Bill Plympton is a 2D animator known for his slapstick, humorous and "sick" films. We watched his first feature length film, "The Tune" which is a musical narrative piece. Plympton's style is very bright and aesthetically pleasing with varying line-art thickness and a lot of shading, particularly on the faces of his characters which gives them more expression. The film has a lot of complex, fast-moving sequences that are very surreal and graphic in nature. Objects morph into other objects, faces transition from cartoon style to realism and caricature; the animation is very captivating and difficult to look away from.
